Hilary Lam

Hilary is a London-based multidisciplinary graphic designer from Hong Kong. Working across print and digital design, her practice focuses on visual identity and editorial work rooted in typography. She is particularly interested in producing work for the cultural and social sectors. Taking an idea-driven and research-based approach, she embraces simplicity in design with an attention to detail, delivering effective and meaningful visual communication across various media.

Ways of Hong Kong

Ways of Hong Kong is a bilingual publication exploring the city’s past and present through the evolving designs of its street nameplates and the Chinese-English translations of street names.

By looking at the visual and verbal languages of the signs, the project reveals stories about Hong Kong’s history and culture, uncovering themes of memory, identity, and power.

Hyper-Type

Visual identity system for an annual typography and type design exhibition and conference exploring the history and current status of typographic practice and type design in relation to historical, contemporary, emerging, and speculative technology.

The identity is based on the idea of time across the spectrum of typography, using the type cursor as a marker of time. With the cursor moving back and forth, the motion simulates interrogation and exploration across different periods of typographic practice, while highlighting content draws attention to various areas of focus.

Lighten Their Load

Campaign rebrand for The Washing Machine Project, a UK-based social enterprise working to end the burden of hand washing clothes – a daily challenge faced by up to 50% of the global population, especially women and girls in low-income, remote, and displaced communities worldwide. The organisation addresses this issue through the distribution of manual washing machines.

The campaign centres around the idea of care: caring about the issue and caring for the people affected by it. The visual identity is based on the care label, a familiar graphic symbol associated with hand washing clothes, making the campaign more relatable to a UK audience. The rebrand aims to help the organisation to communicate with more credibility, raising public awareness while increasing support and funding for their work.
